Description

Kayla has always had a dream and a plan to make it happen. The only challenge? Everyone else seemed to have a plan for her too.

Now, as a confident young woman returning home from college with big news, Kayla is ready to share what the future holds. But what begins as a simple visit home quickly becomes a meaningful reflection on the journey that brought her here.

Together, Kayla and her mom revisit the special “princess gifts” she received throughout her childhood, each one tied to an unforgettable moment in Kayla’s life. As they look back, they realize these weren’t just gifts at all. They were symbols of something deeper: confidence, courage, determination, and the enduring power of a mother’s love.

And when all the pieces come together, Kayla discovers that those gifts held a little magic all along, guiding her step by step toward the dream she never stopped believing in.

This vibrant and diverse picture book offers gentle life lessons and a powerful reminder for children everywhere: when you believe in yourself and stay true to who you are, a little magic can take you a long way.

Author Deedee Cummings

Deedee Cummings is a professional dreamer. She is also an author, therapist, attorney, and mom from Louisville, Kentucky. Cummings founded Make A Way Media in 2014 after struggling to find books with characters who looked like her own children and an extreme lack of stories that reflected their life experiences. Books published by Make A Way focus on hope, diversity, social justice, and therapeutic skills for children and adults. Her work has been featured in HuffPost, Forbes, NPR, USA Today, Essence Magazine, Psych Central, well+Good, and The EveryGirl, among other media outlets. In 2021, she was appointed to the Kentucky Early Childhood Advisory Council by Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, and reappointed to a second term in 2025, acknowledging her decades-long service to the children and families of Kentucky. Cummings is also the founder of The Louisville Book Festival. She was inspired to work to highlight and celebrate a culture of reading in her community after working as an in-home therapist and visiting homes of children who had no books. Cummings believes literacy is a fundamental human right. Her work highlights inspiring messages that remind us all it is never too late to begin again.

Never Give Up On Your Dreams

This book shares the importance of making a plan for your life and reminds the reader that love beats meanness and unkind behavior every time. It’s great how Kayla, the main character, never gives up on her dreams.

Have to get the whole set

Grateful to have received this book as a gift. It’s for kids, but filled me with hope and positivity too! This series is FULL of surprises. I heard it will be turned into a Broadway show and I cannot wait to be front and center.

The final piece to the puzzle!

What a great addition to this collection! I love how this book seemed to wrap up a series of lessons for children. It touched on all of the things I hope to teach my daughter as she grows up!

Inspiring and Realistic – Great read for children beginning to experience the world

Kayla: A Modern-Day Princess—A Little Magic is a wonderfully written and illustrated story that provides multiple scenarios children might encounter while growing up. Kayla explains her feelings about the situations and takes the reader through her thought process on how to respond. This book will empower growing children to choose their own dreams and plans, be confident and proud in who they are (especially any differences), and handle potential situations with maturity.
