How Make A Way Books Can Help You Raise More Resilient Kids

No matter how hard we try, we can’t shelter our kids from all the hard things that happen in the world around them. Kids hear and see things every day that they don’t fully understand. Many times those thoughts and worries stay stuck in their heads because they don’t know how to talk about them, or aren’t sure they should.

Make A Way Media’s hope-filled books address tough topics like:

  • Death
  • Divorce
  • Racism
  • Gender Nonconformity
  • Poverty

Our stories give kids a framework to deal with big issues. They not only create space for you and your kids to talk through tough topics but they also model how to deal with them.

Many of our Make A Way book bundles include fun, interactive workbooks related to the stories that will help you bring lessons from the stories into everyday life.

Meet the Brave Characters Paving The Way

Kayla: A Modern-Day Princess

Kayla is a resilient little girl with big Broadway dreams. Despite the bullies and the barriers, Kayla achieves her dreams and inspires others to do the same.

Tommie

Is Kayla’s best friend and aspiring football player. The problem is, most boys aren’t sure about a girl joining the team. Tommie and Kayla support one another as they break through gender and racial stereotypes to achieve their goals.

Nick

Nick is your average boy who loves video games and hanging out with his friends. In this Christmas-themed series, Nick learns the importance of helping others, overcoming biases and finding hope no matter what comes your way.

Meet The Therapist With a Dream

Back in 2014, lawyer and therapist Deedee Cummings was struggling to find books featuring kids that looked like hers and had similar lived experiences.

As she worked with therapy clients, she realized that kids and parents alike were struggling to talk about hard topics and figure out how to navigate the tough situations.

She blended her passion for diverse books with her therapeutic knowledge to create Make A Way Media’s hope-filled books that model the skills kids need to thrive.

More than a decade later, she has written numerous children’s books (with more on the way), supported kids through school visits, workshops and even launched the Louisville Book Festival to bring literacy to life for local kids.
